A letter from Chloe
Last month, I walk into the bar that for ten years has been my home. The first thing I hear is “Chloe, are you ready to polka?”. I had never polka danced before, but I said yes; Peter is a good leader. Grossmans Tavern has hosted my family, it has been heaven (and hell) to me, it was my creative womb. It is my New Orleans, and it is very much my Toronto.
But the stage there isn’t my home anymore, or at least, not my only home. Stages everywhere are my home, audiences my family.
Dear reader, dear music fan. You are my source of joy, and I love you. You feed my passion and encourage my spirit. I know that I am strong, beautiful, that I am worth a damn, all because you listen, sing, or dance.
And yet what I have given isn’t enough. All the nights when I put so much of myself into that stage, so that I could hardly stand afterwards, they were just a taste of the connection. I want to thrill you, the way music has thrilled me. The bumps and shakes I get when I listen to Yes, or Nina Simone. Like at that moment, while the song is playing, you could fly out of the atmosphere and be one with the celestial wonders. Like there is a Universe hidden within each note that I sing, which I sing just for you.
We can share love even if we never meet, but I hope that some day we do.
If you ever need a friend, just remember,
“Chloe loves me”
